MISSIONS & MORADAS
Modernist Views, 1910-1985
March 23, 2012 – April 28, 2012
Annual Easter exhibition featuring 20th century regionalist, modernist, and impressionist works depicting the missions and moradas of New Mexico, with prints, paintings, drawings, and photography. Artists include Ansel Adams, Gustave Baumann, Morris Blackburn, Lawrence Calcagno, Howard Cook, Gene Kloss, Lucille Leggett, Ralph Pearson, William Shuster, Harold Waldrum, Brooks Willis, and Theo White.
This year’s exhibition focuses especially on the mission church at Rancho de Taos, San Francisco de Asis, which has inspired rich and varied works of art for over a century. The Ranchos de Taos Church, completed in 1815, is a massive adobe structure and perhaps the finest example of mission architecture in New Mexico. As Georgia O’Keeffe once noted, “Most artists who spend any time in Taos have to paint it, I suppose, just as they have to paint a self-portrait.”
